The Shih Tzu’s name translates to “little lion,” a nod to the breed’s regal appearance and proud personality. These dogs were originally bred to resemble the lions often seen in traditional Chinese art.

They also earned the nickname “chrysanthemum-faced dogs” because the hair on their faces grows in every direction. Even when trimmed short, their fur quickly sprouts back around the snout and eyes — giving them their famous lion-like mane and flower-shaped face. 🌼
